Position Description:

Tax Compliance Management:

• Work with the Tax Director and other tax staff on compliance oversight of specific funds and separate accounts, including:
  1. Detailed review of accounting firm-prepared returns, workpapers, and K-1s.
  2. Maintain fund and separate account tax return compliance tracker.
  3. Manage tax return process for NY funds with portfolio teams and compliance firms.
  4. Ensure payments are made via check.
  5. Coordinate quarterly corporate, state non-resident withholding, and FDAP/ECI withholding estimates.
  6. Gather K-1s and returns from joint venture partners.
  7. Manage investor documentation process, including W-8s, W-9s, and QFPF certificates.

Fund Compliance:

• Coordinate and conduct first review of quarterly asset and annual income testing (teams and tax staff prepare schedules from system downloads, Tax Manager reviews and updates if needed based on analysis of hedge fund rules).
• Ownership of property service questionnaire process.

Development and Maintenance:

• Develop and maintain tax website on teams for housing all fund and separate account tax documentation.

Alternatives Fund Oversight:

• Assist in the tax oversight of the to-be-formed alternatives fund, including compliance and other structuring matters.

Compliance Process Management:

• Oversee compliance process for 40 Act hedge fund, mainly property service questionnaires and acquisition due diligence, as well as helping with E&P calculations, SALT, and local taxes.

Federal and State Tax Notice Management:

• Manage federal and state tax notice responses in accordance with fund and separate account policy.

FATCA and Client Documentation:

• Assist in the maintenance of FATCA and know-your-client documentation (Salesforce/ICIS).
• Provide support for ongoing FATCA compliance and processes.

Structuring and Modelling:

• Assist the Tax Director with structuring issues and prospective investor tax leakage modeling, as needed.

Special Tax Initiatives:

• Provide support for special tax initiatives, as needed (e.g., opco/propco transfer pricing study, intercompany debt transfer pricing, determination letter firm policy, state non-resident withholding policy, etc.).

Audit Support:

• Preparation of tax provisions.
• Coordinate hedge fund testing and audit deliverables with audit firm.
• Preparation of FIN 48 memo.

Review Annual Prohibited Transaction Memos:

• Review annual hedge fund prohibited transaction memos for file prepared by staff.

Job Requirements:

• Minimum of 13 years tax experience, preferably within the taxation department of a Big 4 firm with Hedge Fund Clients.
• CPA and Bachelor’s degree in finance, accounting, or taxation.
• Hedge fund experience.
• Capable of managing own workload and tax-related deadlines of the portfolio finance teams.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Excellent analytical skills.
• Ability to work independently and assist with the integration of tax protocol across the firm and work with individuals at all levels within multiple business disciplines.
